         SYNTACTIC (knowing about language)

v word order, rules and patterns of language (grammar such as identifying n.v.adj.adv.);

v punctuation (oral punctuation provides cues to meaning through rhythm and flow, pauses, inflection, and voice modulation);

v morphemes: suffix & affixes

v Can we say it that way? Does that sound right?

 

         GRAPHOPHONIC (knowing about print)

v letter-sound or sound-symbol relationships of language;

v Readers identify unknown words by relating speech sounds to letters or letter patterns (decoding);

v support semantic, syntactic, and pragmatic cues to help readers determine if a word is logical or fit/makes sense

v Does that look right? What word would you expect to see?;

v connection between what they see and what they hear

 

         PRAGMATIC (knowing about purposes or functions of reading)

v it governs what the reader considers important and needs to understand

v What is the purpose and function of this literacy event? How should your use of language vary given the context?
